Why is it called a Hunter?

Pocket watches did not originally have a cover, and it was common for the crystal to be exposed. Hunters who hunted while horseback sometimes fell off their horses, and pocket watches at the time had glass crystals that would often break from the shock of a fall.

The hunter case was originally developed to solve the problem of pocket watches being pierced by broken glass and causing injuries other than when falling off a horse. Since then, hunter cases have spread to a wide range of people, not just hunters, and have become so popular that they are now considered the standard style of pocket watch.

The gesture of opening the lid and checking the time is characteristic of pocket watches, a style that has been popular for centuries.
