CITIZEN（懐中時計）について


  • 東京市長であった後藤新平伯爵が、永く広く市民に愛されるようにと市民を意味するシチズン（CITIZEN）と命名。



  • 日本時計の3本の指に入るブランド「シチズン（CITIZEN)」。シンプルなフェイスと確かな技術をモットーとするシチズン懐中時計です。

  • 昭和2年の秋のこと。名古屋の旧陸軍の偕行社での晩餐会で、昭和天皇を囲みコーヒーを楽しみながら歓談中、たまたま昼の視察先が愛知の時計工場だったこともあってか"国産の時計は正確か"という話題になりました。

    1 人の紳士が当時流行の金側時計を取り出し、「陛下、これは外国製でございますが、まことによく合います。日本製のものはどうも不正確で、まだまだ到底、外国製には及びません」といささか得意気に申し上げたところ、陛下は無造作にズボンの右ポケットから懐中時計を取り出され、「わたしのこの時計は、12円 50銭の国産品だけれども、とてもよく合うよ」といかにも嬉しそうにその紳士に示されました。

    銀色ににぶく光るその懐中時計は、当時、創業後わずか5年にも満たなかった「尚工舎（現シチズン）」が作った初めての時計「CITIZEN（16型懐中時計）」でした。 そして、その時計は官費購入品ではなく、名侍従とうたわれた木下道雄氏が東宮侍従の頃、京橋の「山崎時計店」で2個購入され、1個を私用に、1個を陛下に謹呈されたものでした。

  • 最初は尚工舎のブランドネームで、シチズンという名の時計でしたが、 昭和5年5月28日より会社名をシチズンに変更し、現在まで受け継がれています。
